COVID-19 Updates at the State and Bijou

Friends,

Here at the State and Bijou the heart of our mission is bringing people together to experience the power of film and the belief that this communal experience strengthens our community and the world.

At the same time, our top priority is always the safety of our filmgoers, employees, and volunteers. So while health and safety precautions are already part of our standard operating procedures, in response to COVID-19 (coronavirus) concerns we wanted to update you on the extra steps we are taking to up our game and ensure our community stays healthy.

The State and Bijou continue to be open for business as usual, with some additional precautionary measures in place.

WHAT WE ARE DOING AND WHAT WE’RE ASKING OF YOU:

KEEPING IT (EXTRA) CLEAN: In addition to our standard deep cleaning process, we have been increasing the frequency of cleaning and disinfecting our theater during open hours, including the box office, concessions stand, auditorium, and restrooms. Door handles and counters are being disinfected every 30 minutes during business hours and every night we are thoroughly disinfecting hand-contact surfaces.

SCRUB, SCRUB, SCRUB: Our restrooms and lobby are well stocked with soap and hand sanitizer. Make use of it! We have retrained our employees and volunteers in the fine art of handwashing and hope you are doing the same.

CAPPING ATTENDANCE: With Governor Whitmer issuing an executive order banning all gatherings of more than 250 people in a shared space, we will be capping our auditorium sales at 40% at both the State and Bijou as an extra precautionary measure. Attendance at the movies this time of year does not regularly reach high numbers, so will have plenty of space available for safe viewing, and don’t anticipate any issues.

SPACING IT OUT: This time of year the theaters have a lot of room, so it’s very easy to spread out and sit at least six feet away from each other.

CHOOSE TO STAY HOME: We get it, we want to see that movie too, but if you’re feeling ill, please stay home. Our staff and volunteers are asked to do the same.

PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE: We’re all in this together, and we are encouraging our staff to take all sorts of precautions. So while we strive to give you the very best service possible, if things are taking a little longer than usual because a staff member stayed home or went to wash their hands, please bear with us.

CONTINUAL MONITORING: We are closely monitoring recommendations from local, state, and national officials whose knowledge  far outweighs what we can recall from high school biology class or what we are reading on Facebook. We will update you if anything changes on our end as the situation evolves.

SPRING BREAK AT THE STATE:
So while we are open and operating and continuing to show movies all day, we are sad to announce that due to all the data and recommendations we’re receiving from health officials, we are cancelling our annual Free Spring Break Staycation Week. Given that Spring Break draws hundreds upon hundreds of people to enjoy the movies in packed houses all day, we regretfully will have to hit pause on this year’s event in the interests of public safety.

Thank you in advance for your help in keeping everyone safe and healthy. We’re incredibly grateful for your continued support of the State and Bijou. I’ll keep you posted as things develop. If you listen to my podcast RUMBLE, you’ll be able to hear what I know about what’s going on with this pandemic and the danger we’ve all been put in, staring with tomorrow’s episode (rumble.media)

Stay well, and be prepared for what we are all going to face together.

All my best,
Michael Moore
